It was a great Tour, The guide was, very friendly and helpful. Gave us a lot of details about the historical places and gave us enough time to visit & take pictures. The view on the ihlara valley is totally worth it. As well as view from the selim monastery. Lunch on the ihlara river was a unique experience. the hotel pickup & drop off is in a comfortable car. Totally recommend! For the price, it’s value for money.

Goreme open air museum is a part of red tour. Erosion shaped the incredible landscape of the Goreme valley, but thousands of years ago humans took a cue from Mother Nature and began carving an incredible chamber and tunnel complex into the soft rock. Beginning in the fourth century A.D., an urbanized—but underground—cultural landscape was created here

Goreme Open Air Museum

Goreme open air museum, Ancient volcanic eruptions blanketed this region with thick ash, which solidified into a soft rock—called tuff—tens of metres thick. Wind and water went to work on this plateau, leaving only its harder elements behind to form a fairy tale landscape of cones, pillars, pinnacles, mushrooms, and chimneys, which stretch as far as 130 feet (40 metres) into the sky. But human hands performed equally incredible works here. The rocky wonderland is honeycombed with a network of human-created caves; living quarters, places of worship, stables, and storehouses were all dug into the soft stone. In fact, tunnel complexes formed entire towns with as many as eight different storeys hidden underground. The Goreme Open Air Museum has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1984, and was one of the first two UNESCO sites in Turkey. 1Göreme Open Air Museum

The Uchisar Castle Village, a little village in Cappadocia, is the first region when you drive to Goreme from Nevsehir. The village is dominated by a huge rocks, (castle) which is mirrored in Ortahisar, a similar-sized but much less visited village because it is located out of the road from Nevsehir to Urgup road.

History of Uchisar Castle

This tall volcanic-rock outcrop and the tallest fairy chimney (1.350 m above sea level) is one of Cappadocia's most prominent landmarks and visible for miles around. Riddled with tunnels, it was used for centuries by villagers as a place of refuge when enemy armies overtook the surrounding plains. Climbing through its mazy core to the panoramic vantage point of its peak is a sublime way to watch the sun set over the rock valleys of the Cappadocian countryside - everything from the fantastic hues of red on Mt. Most of the rosy rock cones are topped by flattish, darker stones of harder rock that sheltered the cones from the rain until all the surrounding rock was eaten away, a process known as differential erosion but you can just call it kooky. 3Devrent Valley Cappadocia

Çavuşin Valley takes its name from Çavuşin Village in its region. It is a part of Red Tour. The village, built among large rocks, is home to a long history. The village, with its history dating back to the first century, is the area where Christian monks escaped from Roman attacks. Living spaces have been built inside the rocks to protect them from attacks. Living people used pigeon manure by explaining cavities in the chimneys due to inefficient soils. With the Byzantine period, Christianity lived freely, and with the coming of the Seljuks, it gained a place in Islam in the region. There are many religious buildings that you should definitely visit in Çavuşin Village. You should absolutely have a look at the Çavuşin Church, the Crusader Church, the Church of St. Jean, the Church of the Three Crosses and the Church of St. John the Baptist. You can see centuries-old frescoes and depictions in these churches. You can also see the graves made for the deceased more closely. You will step into a different world while visiting these churches with their history of over a thousand years. Ceramic and pottery workshops, where you will witness the handiwork of the local people, are one of the main livelihoods of the village. In these workshops, you can experience pottery and pottery making as in old times and have an unforgettable memory. The village is located very close to Goreme. 4Çavuşin Village Cappadocia

Pasabagi (pron.pa-sha-bahi), formally known as Monks Valley, is located just a few kilometres outside of the village of Goreme and just a few of kilometres further from the town of Urgup (pron.ür-güp). If you’re wondering why these unusual rock formations are called fairy chimneys, it’s because the early inhabitants of Cappadocia believed that these were the chimneys for the fairies who lived under the ground.

More about Pasabagi Monks valley

Highly remarkable earth pillars can be seen here, in the middle of a vineyard, hence the name of the place which means: the Pasha's vineyard. Pasha means General, the military rank durıng Ottoman rule and it is a very common nick name. This site is also called Monks Valley by the Westerners. The name was derived from some cones carved in tuff stones which stand apart. Currently, there is a vineyard and a number of tuff cones standing right next to the road. Some of these cones split into smaller cones in their upper sections, in which stylites and hermits once hid. The hermitage of Simeon monks was also here. A chapel dedicated to St. Simeon (Simon), and a hermit's shelter is built into one of the fairy chimneys with three heads. The entrance of the cell is decorated with antithetical crosses. Saint Simeon was living in seclusion near Aleppo in the 5th century, when rumours that he made miracles started to spread. Disturbed by all the attention, he began to live at the top of a 2m high column, and later moved to one 15m in height. From there he only descended occasionally to get food and drink brought by his disciples. The hermits of Cappadocia distanced themselves from the world by cutting into fairy chimneys rather than living on top of columns. 5Paşabağı-Monks Valley Cappadocia

Avanos, which was known in the Hittite period as Zu-Winasa, or Nenassa, was called Venessa in the Greek and Roman period and Vanote in the Byzantine according to some historians. The name Avanos is believed to derive from Evranos Bey, a Seljuk military commander. In his ‘Geographika’, written between 58 BC. and 25 AD., the Roman historian Strabo explains that in the political and religious sense Venessa was the third most important city of the Cappadocian Kingdom after Mazaca (modern Kayseri) and Tyana or Eusebia (modern Kemerhisar).

More about Avanos Village

Avanos and its environs, like the entire Cappadocia region, escaped Roman oppression and acquired importance with the habitation of the early Christians here, becoming one of the principal centres of settlement in the region. The city’s architecture also attests to this in structures such as Yamanlı Church, one of the oldest in Cappadocia, the Sarihan Caravanserai, built by the Seljuks in the 13th century of the local yellow volcanic stone, the Alaaddin Mosque, a Seljuk monument that has been open for worship for centuries, and the Mansion of Doctor Hacı Nuri Bey, one of the oldest surviving Avanos houses. Set on the banks of the Kizilirmak, the Red River, about 8 km (5 miles) from Goreme, Avanos has a lively centre with all the usual amenities including a modern, tourist-oriented hamam (Turkish bath). A large travelling market visits Avanos on Fridays. Starting just outside the shopping centre the old village of Avanos winds up the hills leading away from the town and is a beautiful maze of old stone houses, some restored, some converted and some sadly abandoned to their fate. In some of the abandoned houses the features of traditional Ottoman architecture can be recognised along with ancient decorations, motifs and murals.
